WHAT CORRELATES WITH ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT AS SHOWN IN THE RESEARCH?

Excellent work. Socioeconomic status, which includes both choices voted for here and excludes the choices not selected, is what correlates with student achievement as shown in the research.

To those who claim we need to educate these kids out of poverty (I'm looking at you Obama, Duncan, Gates, Rhee, DFER, Guggenheim, Canada, and the rest) I say, enough already.

Here's some data to back this up from Stephen Krashen:

Why Teachers Don't Deserve All The Vitriol

Their school is broke, their teaching staff is smaller than ever, and the last advanced placement course has been slashed from the master schedule.

But the two-member English department at Castlemont’s East Oakland School of the Arts decided to teach AP English anyway, before school and during an arts period.

I'm Hosting My Own Blog Talk Radio Show Today: Confusion Update. Updated. Again.

The Frustrated Teacher's Blog Talk Radio show today, February 7, 2011 at 3:30 PST should be interesting. Sevren Fahr, a self-proclaimed liberal Democrat, like yours truly, hates teacher unions and tenure. I don't. He has all sorts of reasons why he hates them, but none of them make much sense to me. He seems even angrier than me, too!

Here is an example of Sevren's comments from MichellRheeFirst.org where we disagreed about the greatness of Rhee's taping of students mouth's:
I'd like to tape YOUR mouth shut, and would probably have the backing of most of America, or at least anyone on this site. See you on the 7th, and be prepared. And she [Michelle Rhee] survives because most of us believe, while not being perfect, such as yourself tft (you should at least have the guts to use your name, instead of hiding behind 3 consonants), she certainly has provided dialogue about a system in need of massive change. While you, on the other hand stand on vitriol, and hackneyed old news stories. The Dead is dead, and so is your belief in the status quo.
Won't you join us?!

Confusion Update: Some of you may have tried to listen to the radio show and spent some time "buffering." That's because there is no show yet. It will be at 3:30, and then available after that for streaming or downloading, in perpetuity.

So, there is nothing to hear yet. We will be live at 3:30 (25 minutes away), and recorded forever.

Update: The show was a success! Thanks to Dave at education4real and Bronx for calling in.  You can hear it at the link or in the sidebar of this blog.

New Update (2-10-2011): Fascinating news! Sevren Fahr has threatened me with a lawsuit, or something. He told me to stop using his name. I am not "using" his name, I am identifying him by name. Not the same thing, is it? Counselor?

Anyway, about our next show, Sev says, "I've changed my mind, I want NOTHING to do with you. I will go it alone...you're a crutch and an ass." He goes on to say, in a subsequent email, "Oh, and if you post anythingt [sic] I say again, I will seek legal redress, and have already spoken to my attorney. My name and words...cease and desist."

Does this post count?  I now have March 7th open if anyone want to be my guest on Blog Talk Radio.

I have no idea what I did to poor Sev. We do go back and forth over at MichelleRheeFirst, but he goes by his name, Sevren Fahr, over there, so I didn't expose it.

Maybe he didn't like the quote of his above, but that has been there for a while and is also on my BTR page, and has been there since I setup our show we did on Feb. 7th. And, he wrote it originally as a response to a comment of mine at MichelleRheeFirst.

He did tell me, on the air, that he used to be a comedian. Maybe that explains things?

I hope he calms down soon. He is very excitable!

Blog Talk Radio, Anyone? Updated

Blog Talk Radio is cool thing.  It's free (Premium services available) and easy.  The free option allows me a maximum 30 minute show, once a day, and not between 4 and 8pm, which is prime time.  I can have up to five callers at a time and there is a chatroom during the show which gets podcasted for posterity.

My experience so far has been great.  I have been on a few shows with the Total Tutor and the Bronx Teacher and everyone is always gracious.  It is a good way for opposing sides to air their differences.  People tend to have good manners on the air.

Since doing their shows I chose to discuss some things with a dude on my own show (available now!).  It was also fun, and interesting, and illuminating.  I would like to do more.  I have one more scheduled for the dude and I, but can schedule more.  I think I could only do a show if I knew someone was going to be there to have a dialog, especially if they disagree with me.

Anyone interested?  It'll cost you the price of the toll call (619 area code) to get on the air.  Listening is free.

Update: Sevren (the dude) has pulled out of the March 7 radio show.  Actually, the post above this one has the details (instead of coming on the radio with me, he wants to sue me!).

I need a new guest. Let me know in comments if you would like to come on the already scheduled show.
